What does your handshake say about you? Confident, diffident, overbearing, wimpy? Does the sound of your speaking voice match the grip of your handshake?

In teaching voice improvement, I have found through the years that those whose speaking voices are weak or wimpy very often follow through with an equally limp handshake.

And, those whose voices express timidity often do not get the coveted job or the promotion because the image they project is not one of confidence. To have a speaking voice that exudes confidence and authority is a tremendous asset. To have a speaking voice that sounds rich, warm and resonant is a fantastic tool: people want to listen when you speak. When Vin Diesel opens his mouth, we want to listen to him; when James Earl Jones talks, we are drawn to him; when Kathleen Turner speaks, we are enamored.

Recently I had the opportunity of working with Rob, a man who came to me because of his very soft, timid speaking voice. His handshake, however, belied his unassertive voice. Firm, confident and strong, this man’s grip told me so much about him that his voice was unable to convey.

Because the majority of the population is unaware that they can improve their voice, they often speak with a sound that is incompatible with the rest of their image. There are so many wonderful resonant speaking voices that we’re not hearing because most people don’t know of the ‘hidden treasure’ they have inside.

After showing Rob how to tap into his ‘hidden treasure,’ I heard a voice that matched his confident handshake. Was his voice assertive? Without a doubt – however, as much as he sounded authoritative and confident, his voice was not overbearing or loud.

I don’t like loud. Loud hurts your listener’s ears and in time it can not hurt your throat and those delicate vocal cords. When I work with a client I show them how to increase their volume properly without shouting or yelling. The result is a larger voice, a bigger voice, but not a loud voice.

Today, competition in the work force is greater than it has ever been. If your voice can project a dynamic image, then you are one step ahead of your competition.

Incidentally, within two hours of showing Rob how to place his voice properly, he was thrilled with the results. This man came into my studio sounding insecure and diffident; he left with a voice that matched his handshake – confident, assured, assertive, and able.

Consider the following scenario:  there are two men both equally attractive.  One has a voice that is warm, rich and deep.  The other man has a voice that is soft, high-pitched, wimpy.  Which man do you think women will find more attractive?  If you guessed the man with the dynamic voice then you are correct.

But now consider this scenario:  there are two men one of whom is physically more attractive than the other.  The less attractive man has a voice that is warm, rich, deep; the more attractive guy sounds like a wimp.  Which man do you think women will find more attractive?  In this case, the answer is definitely the man who has the dynamic speaking voice.

A deep voice captivates women and it speaks volumes about you.  It says that you are confident, assured and sexy.  Not surprisingly, a deep voice has much to do with a man’s testosterone level, creating something akin to animal magnetism.

So what are you to do if your voice does not display the characteristics that produce animal magnetism?

Why not consider voice training?  You have a better voice inside, something I refer to as your ‘real’ speaking voice; however, because you are probably not using your chest cavity to power your sound, you are probably unaware of how deep your voice actually is.  Simply put, there are a lot of men in the world who have deep voices but don’t know it.

If you happen to speak with excessive nasality, then your pitch will sound even higher than it is in actuality.  What this means is that if you can eliminate the strident nasal sounds, you will discover a deeper voice as well as a sound that is not akin to nails on a blackboard!

99% of the men with whom I have worked have a deeper pitch after training and a good example is Craig.  When this young man found his ‘real’ voice, the transformation was incredible.  While Craig’s ‘habitual’ voice was not particularly bad or wimpy or weak, his ‘real’ voice was deeper, richer and authoritative. 

What results from good voice training is not only a better-sounding speaking voice, but a tremendous improvement in self-esteem and self image.  Remember, women are not only attracted to a deep voice, they are attracted to a man who sounds confident.

If you can approach a woman with a voice that exudes both sexuality and confidence, you stand a much greater chance of winning her attention and her interest.  The late Barry White had such a voice.  Whether he was singing or speaking, it didn’t matter.  Women were drawn to his sound.

While you may or may not be the next Barry White, your voice might be reminiscent of Sean Connery, James Earl Jones, Vin Diesel, Peter Coyote, or George Clooney – all great voices, all voices powered by the chest.

Allow your chest to do your talking and plan on animal magnetism to follow!

It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who are so concerned with their visual image, watching their weight, working out, donning the most recent style of clothing, and yet are totally in the dark when it comes to the sound of their speaking voice.  If you are plagued with a voice that is nasal, whiny, high-pitched and thin, you are not doing justice to your visual image.

People recognize you by the sound of your voice.  Unfortunately, how you think you sound and how you actually sound are two different ball games.  When you leave a message on your voicemail and play it back, what does it sound like to you?  Certainly, it is different than how you sound in your head.  For many people, it is a shocking, unpleasant experience because what they hear is not recognizable:  it is not how they hear themselves.

The truth, unfortunately, is that however unpleasant that voice may sound on your voicemail, answering machine, camcorder, or other type of recording equipment, it is the image you project vocally.  It is how others recognize you.

What is that sound saying about you?  If you find it embarrassing, how do think others perceive it?

A whiny, nasal voice in a male leaves the impression of a wimpy man because excessive nasality raises the pitch (highness or lowness of sound – not the volume which deals with loudness or softness) of the voice.  A high-pitched voice in a man does not exude masculinity or sensuality whereas a voice similar to that of Vin Diesel, Sean Connery or George Clooney does.

The female voice that is high-pitched and nasal is irritating and, in the long run, a turn-off.  Often, the strident female voice gives one the impression of a bimbo as well.  When Hollywood wanted a sensual voice to portray Jessica Rabbit in the movie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, they didn’t select Fran Drescher.  Instead they chose Kathleen Turner.  

You have a better voice inside.  It is just a matter of finding your optimum or ‘real’ voice by allowing your chest cavity to power your sound.  Most people are unfamiliar with this technique because most are using their other 4 resonators and not including their chest, the most powerful and largest of the 5 resonators.  If, for example, your voice is characterized by excessive nasality, then your nose is your primary resonator.

When you find your ‘real’ voice, you will discover a voice that is richer, deeper, warmer, and much more sensual.  And, you won’t be embarrassed hearing that fantastic voice on your voicemail to boot!

Recently, I read an article about improving your voice in 7 days.  While I do not agree with the writerâ??s suggestions or methodology, the truth is that you can actually find your â??realâ?? voice in about 1 hour.  Admittedly, your â??realâ?? voice will not be a habit in only 60 minutes, but one of the fascinating results about the correct approach to voice training is that you will begin your hour with your old or habitual voice and you will end that hour with your real one.  In fact, in many cases, this discovery takes only a few minutes.

What is fascinating about good voice improvement techniques is that you have a better voice inside â?? no matter how bad you think it is presently.  Everyone has a speaking voice that is richer, warmer, and resonant.  It is only a matter of locating where it is and training yourself to use it.  And, in the process, you may discover a speaking voice as good as, or even better than, that of James Earl Jones, Kathleen Turner, Kate Beckinsale, Sean Connery, Demi Moore, Vin Diesel, George Clooney, Cher, or Peter Coyote.

When I first started my business, I was at a meeting in which we had to stand and introduce ourselves.  After the introductions, a woman approached me and told me that voice training was the icing on the cake.  I beg to differ.  Your voice is the fundamental; it is the cake.  A wimpy, strident, harsh, soft, monotone, breathy, high-pitched, child-like, nasal, or loud voice will not make what you are saying nearly as interesting or dynamic as one that is rich, warm, and resonant.   In fact, if any of the above characteristics are typical of your speaking voice, then it is safe to say that your voice will eventually turn your listeners off.

The process of discovering your â??realâ?? voice involves using your chest to power and amplify your sound.  Currently, you are using only 4 of your 5 resonators.  These resonators or cavities include your voice box, your throat, your mouth and your nose.  If you are not using your chest, the largest of those 5 cavities, then your voice will never be able to display its true pitch nor its true breadth and depth.

One of the many benefits of finding your voice is that you will notice a surprising difference with your singing voice as well if you have the ability to sing.  (This training will not make you a singer, however, if you are unable to carry a tune!)  You will have more power, greater range, and a broader sound.  The reason is because the basic principles of improvement for the speaking voice are the same techniques you would learn if you were to study singing.

Imagine finding your â??realâ?? voice in a matter of 60 minutes or less and discovering a sound that you never knew was in there.  All it takes is correct placement and the desire to learn.
