Over the weekend, internet gossip claimed Diesel had pulled out from the flick, however, the star’s rep dubbed the claims as untrue, telling MTV News: “I made a few calls on this and I can tell you that it is completely not true.”

One of the more delicious-looking offerings is “Fast Five,” which reunites “The Fast and the Furious” stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in another high-speed, custom car-fueled adventure. They’ll be joined in next year’s movie by a brand new character, a tough-as-nails lawman tasked with bringing the outlaws in, played by the always-entertaining Dwayne Johnson. MTV’s Josh Horowitz spoke to the actor recently at the Spike Guy’s Choice Awards and he managed to squeeze out a few new details about the character and his role in the story.

“We’re gonna introduce a new character into the franchise,” he said. “A really unique U.S. Marshal who is hired to hunt and track down Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.” Unique? What the heck does that mean?

“He’s a former bounty hunter,” Johnson explained. “He has a unique group of guys who, when the government has issues in trying to track down and find individuals, they call my character.” Other than the government-sponsored bit, it almost sounds a little like the A-Team, doesn’t it? I wonder what other “colorful” personalities fill out the rest of the team.

Johnson’s not saying, but he’s clear on what his orders will be: “I get me and my guys, we’re gonna hunt them down, we’re gonna track them, we’re gonna bring their asses in, we’re gonna whip their asses. Not necessarily in that order.”

So, Variety’s announcement that Vin Diesel will be starring in Paramount’s game-to-film adaptation of “The Wheelman” should really come as a surprise to no one. However, it is news that John Singleton will direct, although given his past work on “2 Fast, 2 Furious” that might not be surprising either!

The game (and the movie) has Diesel playing an expert driver who comes out of retirement to protect a woman from his past. He ends up in Barcelona, caught in the middle of a gang war, which encourages a lot of guns, explosions, and Diesel grimness.

The “Wheelman” video game hit store shelves just last month, but the project has been brewing since 2006. Paramount formed a partnership with Midway Games (both owned by Sumner Redstone) with the idea of releasing the game and its big screen adaptation simultaneously. However, Redstone sold his stake in Midway and the game moved to Ubisoft, though Paramount has kept their interest in bringing it to silver screens.

The film’s script was penned by Rich Wilkes, but rewritten by Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell. is being produced by Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Diesel, and his One Race Films partner, Samantha Vincent. While the film is being fast tracked into production, no start date is available, but as Diesel has a pretty clean slate, it could hit the accelerator any day.

Who am I not to oblige? “xXx” and “The Fast and the Furious” director Rob Cohen is finished working with Vin Diesel for the forseeable future. Cohen, who had been set to direct the gravelly-voiced actor in “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage,” has now backed out of the project, according to a report in Variety. Cohen has instead turned his attention to “Medieval,” a blockbuster action romp that the director describes as “‘The Maginificent Seven’ in the Middle Ages.”

Cohen will be working off of a script from Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, with New Regency financing/distributing the film through Fox and “Terminator Salvation” director McG serving in some sort of production role. Cohen studied anthropology and European history at Harvard, which is what sparked his interest in the project. The Variety report offers no story details, but cites “sources” as saying that “the action brings together warriors from disparate cultures.”

For those who don’t remember (or don’t know), John Sturges’ “The Magnificent Seven” (1960) is a classic Western, inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai” (1954). In “Magnificent,” residents of a Mexican village appeal for help when their homes are terrorized by bandits. Seven gunslingers come together, for varying reasons, to aid them. One would guess that “Medieval” will follow a similar route, replacing ten-gallon hats and six-shooters with swords and shields.

– Jet Li is all set to star in his first Chinese-language film since 2007′s “The Warlords.” There’s no word on the plot of “Ocean Paradise,” but it marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Xue Xiao-lu. Li will star alongside Taiwanese actress Kwai Lun-mei. (The Hollywood Reporter)

– TV director Jason Winer (“Modern Family,” “Samantha Who?”) will try his hand with feature film in “Shining City.” Adapted from the book by Seth Greenland, “Shining” follows an unemployed suburbanite who inherits the family dry cleaning business from his recently deceased father. Only it’s not just a dry cleaning business; the store is actually a front for a prostitution racket. As you might expect, hilarity ensues. (The Hollywood Reporter)

– Susan Sarandon has joined the cast of “Money Never Sleeps” (also known as the “Wall Street” sequel). The actress will play the mother of the young trader (Shia LaBeouf) at the center of the story. Cue the “Shia LaBeouf’s inappropriate mother comments” jokes. (Variety)

– Michael Caleo is writing the crime drama “Volcano” for EuropaCorp, with Luc Besson and his pals there set to produce. The focus of the movie will be the small Bahamian island Norman’s Cay, which was the evil genius headquarters of Carlos Lehder, right hand man to Pablo Escobar. (Variety)

Citing a “trusted source,” website CineFOOLS reported that “Vin Diesel has dropped out of ‘xXx 3.’” No reason accompanied the news, though the writer speculated that it might have something to do with director Rob Cohen’s departure from the franchise. Diesel of course launched the franchise in 2002, though the 2005 sequel centered on a new hero, played by Ice Cube.

Seeing as how the title of the film specifically references Diesel’s character, his departure would likely spell some pretty significant changes for the coming sequel. Fortunately, it turns out that the rumor is untrue: Vin Diesel is still on board to star in “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage,” which currently has a tentative 2011 release listed.

The word comes from Diesel’s publicist, who checked out the rumor and confirmed it to be false. As he said in his e-mail to MTV News, “I made a few calls on this and I can tell you that it is completely not true.” So there you have it.

Move along people. There’s nothing to see here. Except “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” starring Vin Diesel of course, but that’s a couple years away.

The first should appeal to the ever-growing audience of people who love themselves some religious conspiracy. Following the success of the Tom Hanks-starring adaptations of Dan Brown’s books “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels & Demons,” today brings the no-brainer confirmation that Columbia Pictures is moving forward with adapting the most recent story in that series: “The Lost Symbol.”

The story brings Hanks’ Robert Langdon back to the United States, to Washington, D.C., where he attempts to unravel a mystery involving the Freemasons. The studio has confirmed “Eastern Promises” writer Steven Knight for the script, though no deal is yet in place for Hanks. However, the Variety report on the news does state that the veteran actor is expected to be back.

Elsewhere in Hollywood, and reported in Variety, Universal revealed that plans are set for another “Fast and Furious,” currently being called “Fast Five.” The process is much further along than it is with the Brown adaptation, as much of the returning cast and top-level crew are already confirmed.

Stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker will be back, along with director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz. In this follow-up, Diesel and Walker will play fugitives on the run, presumably from behind the wheel of very fast custom cars. The plan is for shooting to start before the year’s end, with a hoped-for 2011 release.

The bulk of the story follows on their attempts to escape, but nothing in that movie stands out more than the character of Richard B. Riddick, played by Vin Diesel. Although he’s framed as a notorious killer, Riddick won audiences over for his badass attitude and his narrow-yet-just outlook. It’s not that he’s an evil man; he just recognizes the realities of living in a hard universe.

The character was so popular that writer/director David Twohy conceived a spin-off, “The Chronicles of Riddick,” which was meant to be a trilogy. Although it led to an exceptional video game, prequel “Escape from Butcher Bay,” the first “Chronicles” failed to excite audiences in the way that “Pitch Black” did. Fans still got a deeper glimpse into the universe however, and they were left wanting when the story never continued. Until now, that is.

Universal has given the go-ahead for a third movie in the series, with Twohy returning to write and direct and Diesel reprising his Riddick role. The players aren’t quite ready to start talking plot points, but Variety reports that the tone of the movie will fall closer to “Pitch Black” than “Chronicles,” and that the focus will be on Riddick rather than the larger universe he lives in, according to insiders.

Which is… interesting. Anyone who saw “Chronicles” knows that *SPOILER ALERT* it ends with Diesel’s Riddick assuming his role as king of the galaxy’s most fearsome group of aggressors since the Borg of “Star Trek.” It’ll be interesting to see how Twohy writes the character out of that particular corner. Perhaps the coming next chapter will be a prequel. Or maybe Riddick will decide that the people he leads are worthless, and so he’ll slice & dice them with those badass blades of his.

Frankly, it doesn’t matter to me. As a fan of the series, and of the combined talents of Twohy and Diesel, I’m definitely looking forward to exploring Riddick’s exploits once again. Last year’s “Assault on Dark Athena” video game was little more than a tease; it only served to remind fans that there’s still plenty more story to be told for the shiny-eyed killer.

The only potential snag to work around is Diesel’s involvement in the next “Fast and Furious” movie, which was confirmed just last week. It looks like this is going to happen though, so prepare yourselves, fellow “Riddick” fans.

The news became official last week, when it was reported that Universal had given the go-ahead for series creator David Twohy to write and direct what will be the third movie in the franchise, after “Pitch Black” and “The Chronicles of Riddick.”

At the time, all we heard was that this next movie would fall closer in tone to the first movie, a taut sci-fi thriller, than the second, which went for more of a big, overblown action spectacle. Now, thanks to a report on the foreign sale of the movie in The Hollywood Reporter, we have our first real plot details. And they weren’t kidding about the shift in tone.

The plan is to strand Diesel’s Richard B. Riddick, a notorious criminal-at-large, on an alien world. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it was the basic setup for “Pitch Black.” It sounds like this time Diesel will be alone… at first. He’ll soon meet “trisons,” an indigenous “three-legged bison,” and “mud demons.” He’ll also have to contend with two groups of bounty hunters, one of which gets around on… jetcycles. Sweet. I bet Diesel allies himself with the other group.

As a fan of the series, I like the basic idea presented here. The great failing of “Chronicles” is that the Riddick character doesn’t come off well as a heroic sort of anti-hero. It made sense in “Pitch Black,” where his inner criminality ultimately shone through, but it felt cheapened by the scale of the sequel. This third movie looks to re-focus the series on what’s really important: Riddick kicks unholy amounts of ass.

My only concern is where this story will fit into the series’ continuity. When we last left Riddick, he had wrested control of an evil galactic empire from its brutal leader. Will the new story account for that? There were once plans for a trilogy, meant to start with “Chronicles,” that would have taken Riddick — as the king of this marauding force — to the darkest corners of the galaxy. It seems that those plans have been reined in, and I think the series will be better for it. I still wonder how the series continuity will account for the change.
